The Red Devils vs. The Blues
The Manchester United – Chelsea rivalry is one of the newer rivalries in football. For a long time, Chelsea were nowhere near the standard of Manchester United so no real rivalry existed. Geographically they aren’t connected and for a long time Chelsea was no more a rival to Manchester United than Blackburn or West Ham was. This has changed since Chelsea became a lot more competitive. This meant they were more of a threat to the Red Devils and so some spice was added to the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry.

Rivalry Summary on Manchester United vs. Chelsea - History & Highlights
Even so, it wouldn’t be in the same class as some of the bigger other rivalries in the Premiership where the two sets of fans avidly follow the rival and get real joy out of the rival losing. Manchester United still aren’t there yet with Chelsea. Yes, when they play each other it is a big deal and the Manchester United – Chelsea rivalry burns brightly, but it still has a way to get to get to the next level. The two met in the 1994 FA Cup Final and Chelsea were such a different team then, that it has had no bearing on the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry today. It was Chelsea’s first FA Cup final for 24 years, while Manchester United last appeared four years earlier.

Chelsea didn’t have a tough run to the Final only needing to get past Barnet, Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United, Wolves and Luton.

Manchester United defeated Sheffield United, Norwich City, Wimbledon, Charlton and Oldham on its way to Wembley.

The gulf between the two teams was massive. United were loaded with internationals such as Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin, Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona.

Chelsea could only boast journeymen like Dennis Wise, Craig Burley, Mark Stein and John Spencer.

It was 0-0 at halftime but two Cantona penalties six minutes apart blew the game open and a third to Mark Hughes three minutes later saw the contest over.

Things didn’t really heat up in the Manchester United – Chelsea rivalry until Roman Abramovich came on board and revitalized the club. He brought in a number of world-class players who would enable Chelsea to consistently compete on the highest level.

Now there was something to the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry, but it wasn’t just because of the players. Jose Mourinho was the new Chelsea manager and he really stepped up the rivalry. His running feud with Sir Alex Ferguson threw a lot of fuel on the Manchester United – Chelsea rivalry fire. After a while, things settled down between the two and antagonism was replaced by respect. When Mourinho left Stamford Bridge, one could sense a deflating of the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry and Ferguson himself was a bit sad about it.

"He was terrific for football and terrific for Chelsea,” he said. “He brought something fresh and new to our game and I enjoyed the competition with him. I wish him well but I just don't know what I am going to do with my wine now. I will miss the personal challenge but what it does to them doesn't matter to me,” he added.

But Ferguson acknowledged that no one man is bigger than the game and that the Manchester United – Chelsea rivalry would go on without Mourinho stoking the flames.

The next time Manchester United played Chelsea without Mourinho in the dugout, Ferguson confirmed the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry would go on.

"We are still playing Chelsea. It is still the same players and that in itself is a challenge for us. If you look at the record between us over the last three or four years, there is nothing in it."

And there was nothing in it when they met in the 2007 FA Cup Final. Chelsea defeated Macclesfield Town, Nottingham Forest, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn on its way to the final.

Manchester United had to get through the all-Premiership group of Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Reading, Middlesbrough and Watford in order to make it to the decider.

Times had changed and Chelsea weren’t the same kind of powderpuff team it had been in 1994. Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Claude Makelele and Petr Cech gave Chelsea the star power it didn’t have 13 years prior. Manchester United were still the same superstar side it was with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar.

It was the first FA Cup final to be played at the new Wembley. After regulation it was all level and with it looking destined to be going to penalties Drogba scored the winner.

This added some spice to the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry. Meeting in Europe is a great way to further a rivalry even more and when you meet in the Final, it definitely takes it to the next level. The two met in Moscow around 12 months later for the 2008 Champions League final. United were looking for its third title while Chelsea were after its first.

As many finals are, the match was a very tense affair. The game opened up somewhat with a 26th minute goal to Ronaldo. Chelsea looked for an equalizer and Frank Lampard scored it just before half-time. This gave Chelsea a lot of confidence and they came out in the second half looking more assured. It was tight with Drogba hitting the post and Giggs missing a chance near the end of 90 minutes.

Heading to extra time, it got even crazier. Lampard hit the crossbar and Giggs was again denied – this time by a John Terry header off the line. Towards the end of the match tempers frayed and Drogba was sent off. This would prove vital as he wasn’t around to take a penalty in the shootout.

Of the first nine takers, only Ronaldo missed meaning a John Terry goal which give Chelsea the win. He slipped on the wet ground to hand United a life line. They took it when Van der Saar saved from Nicolas Anelka. This win while not so good for Chelsea as it was for the Chelsea-Manchester United rivalry. As long as these two play each other, everyone is going to think of this night in Moscow.
